The text of the book had initially stretched my reading ability but, by 1955, I would have been a fully paid-up member of the Friends of Narnia, if such an organisation had existed. The newspaper had received it, but it had not been sent out to any of their contributors. My godfather, the proprietor of the Church Times, had sent me a copy of this latter book (alas no longer in my possession!) for Christmas 1950. Secondly, it was written by the same author who was responsible for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I wondered what surprise and joy had to do with each other. First of all I was intrigued by the title. I was attracted to looking at the book for two reasons. My father, an Anglican parish priest, did not buy many books in the 50s, so this purchase was a significant event. I was about ten years old when my father bought the autobiographical book by C.S.Lewis, Surprised by Joy. What a wonderfully diverse list! I especially loved what he said about The Penguin Book of First World War Poetry. The list of books Haig read during his depression. I didn’t start marking up the book until the last third, and here’s what struck me (page numbers are from the paperback version): What did surprise me were the places I marked. It’s a generous-hearted book, which didn’t surprise me at all. He wants to tell us his experiences, but also give us a context and some tips. I really liked, however, that it is a book that’s part memoir, part exploration of the topic of depression, and part self-help. The chapters are short, and sometimes they felt too short I wanted more description, to be shown where he went, perhaps so I could compare it to where I have been. Some things were so true that I felt I’d read them before, though that could have just been that I’d thought them before, myself, many times. Like any book about a very complex and personal illness, it was hit and miss for me. I like that he continues to speak out about depression, and I definitely want to read his book The Humans. I follow him on Twitter, and a friend sent me a couple of quotes from him at important moments. So I finally got around to reading Matt Haig’s Reasons to Stay Alive. I hate it when a main character has to spend so much time and effort lying to her friends and family. The fact that the Archive isn't known to pretty much anyone except Mackenzie and her fellow Archive employees didn't help things for me either. Before I knew it, I was sucked into Mackenzie's world and I couldn't imagine setting the book in any other place. I was expecting a fantasy world, or at the very least an undefined medieval-ish fantasy-ish world like Victoria Schwab's first book The Near Witch.Īt first I was pretty bummed about this because given the choice between the real world and a fantasy world, I'll pick the fantasy world hands down.īut, I coached myself to "just go with it" and I tried to forget my disappointment over the location and just settle into the story. I had no idea the setting would be the modern world. Book Review: Scent of Magic by Maria V.Book Review: The Fourth Stall Part III by Chris Ry.Book Review: The Archived by Victoria Schwab. He became a detective at the ripe old age of nineteen when he joined the Baltimore branch of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, housed in the Continental Building. The story is about a former Marine and Iraq War veteran who has turned into a hitman, the titular Billy Summers. However, this is a book that starts out being very good and only gets better and better from there, climaxing in a bittersweet ending. It could be said that because a major character is introduced almost halfway into the read that King might have painted himself into a bit of a corner and had to throw something new into the mix. What’s more, the book goes on for at least four acts, which means that you get curve balls thrown into the mix - this is a novel about crosses and double-crosses, and seeking vengeance and justice for all of them. It’s two stories in one, but there’s enough here to fill at least three novels. To that end, I’m happy to report that King’s latest novel, Billy Summers, is destined to go down as a classic as it is one of his very best novels - or at least best in terms of his late-career output. Perhaps this might be for the best because how many times must we get a variant on “the car that kills people” short story or novel? It could be that King’s well has run dry in this regard, but it might turn out that this change to writing crime fiction offers a little more variety to the King oeuvre. Stephen King has seemingly turned some of his attention away from the occult or supernatural and has become something of a crime writer. Some medical and financial terms are also employed because it is intertwined between the character's development and the plot of the story.Ĭode-switching is a socio-linguistic phenomenon that often happens in our daily life.
